hello,

Are Your Snacks Making You Hungier?

Today, we’re diving into the world of health supplements, exploring common questions and shedding light on three key supplements that could make a difference in your well-being. I’m commonly asked about two supplements in particular: multivitamins and probiotics.

Multivitamins and Probiotics: Do You Really Need Them?

As a nutritionist, I’m frequently asked about the necessity of multivitamins and probiotics. Let’s tackle multivitamins first. For individuals with a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, a multivitamin may offer little additional benefit*. While multivitamins contain essential nutrients, they often lack the specific dosages needed for targeted health concerns. Instead, focus on diversifying your diet to naturally obtain essential vitamins and minerals.

Similarly, the widespread use of broad-spectrum probiotics may not be the holy grail for gut health that many believe. While probiotics have their place in addressing specific health conditions, such as gastrointestinal issues, their efficacy depends on the strains and dosages used. Rather than relying solely on probiotic supplements, prioritise dietary changes that promote gut health, such as increasing your fibre intake, diversifying your plant-based foods and consuming fermented foods.

*Multi-vitamins are usually always recommended for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding due to increased demands on the body, and those who have undergone gastric sleeve surgery due to the lack of volume they are able to eat.

Key Supplements for Optimal Health

Now, let’s explore three supplements that could complement your wellness routine and may provide additional health benefits:

  • Fish Oil Supplements: If you’re not a fan of seafood or struggle to incorporate fatty fish into your diet, a fish oil supplement could be beneficial. Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fish oil supports heart health, reduces inflammation, and may alleviate symptoms of inflammatory conditions like arthritis and endometriosis.
  • Magnesium: Magnesium plays a crucial role in numerous bodily functions, including energy production and stress management. For individuals experiencing high stress, fatigue, or chronic constipation, magnesium supplements—particularly magnesium citrate or magnesium glycinate—may offer relief and support overall well-being.
  • Creatine: Popular among athletes and fitness enthusiasts, creatine supplements are known for their performance-enhancing effects. Creatine aids in energy production, making it especially valuable during high-intensity workouts and strength training. Additionally, creatine may support cognitive function and overall energy levels.

Navigating the Supplement Landscape

While these supplements can offer valuable support, it’s essential to approach supplementation mindfully. Consider your individual health needs, consult with a healthcare professional, and choose high-quality supplements from reputable sources. Remember, supplements should complement—not replace—a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.

Supplements can be valuable tools for enhancing health and well-being, but they’re not one-size-fits-all solutions. Whether you’re considering fish oil, magnesium, or creatine, prioritise informed decision-making and listen to your body’s needs. If you’re unsure about which supplements are right for you, don’t hesitate to seek guidance from a qualified healthcare provider.
