The term ‘weight loss coach’ is something I’ve seen around lately, and I wanted to expand on this a bit. Let’s cover who a weight loss coach might be, what they need to know, and how they can help you with successful weight loss.
Who’s a weight loss coach?
This isn’t a pre-defined term, meaning anyone can call themselves a weight loss coach (which can be a red flag!). Simply, it is someone who is helping you lose weight. Ideally, you want them to have specific qualifications in order to do that. So you want either a qualified and registered Nutritionist or Dietitian. If someone is registered with a national association, this means they have a Bachelor degree of education in this topic (not a 3 day online course!). A personal trainer may call themselves a weight loss coach, but I would check if they have any extra qualifications in nutrition.
What do they do?
A weight loss coach might provide 1:1 support through in-person or online meetings and regular communications over email. They will provide dietary and lifestyle advice suited towards your individual needs and medical history. Dietary advice will ebb and flow depending on how you are going and the success you are seeing and a weight loss coach can help you understand how to adapt things based on your results.
Are they helpful?
Yes! Many of my clients who are working towards weight loss struggle with accountability and ongoing support. Most people need regular check-ins to stay on track and have a supportive environment around them of people who are going through a similar journey. Losing weight can be difficult, and it is important to have people who support you along the way and can help guide you in the right direction.
Am I a weight loss coach?
Technically I am! As a nutritionist who’s all about evidence-based practices, I’m here to give you the best advice for achieving sustainable weight loss. I make it a priority to stay on top of the latest research, so you can trust that the tips and guidance I offer are backed by solid evidence.
